Irini Mourtzoukou spent her first night at Korydallos prison on Monday (14/7), where she will be held for the murders of three infants, two of whom were her own, while she also attempted to kill her friend. The 25-year-old, who was ordered into pretrial detention after her testimony before the Patras investigator, was transferred yesterday afternoon silently from police headquarters under strict security measures, accompanied by police officers and placed in a specially designed cell for her protection. There she is held alone and under continuous surveillance, in the same section as Roula Pispirigou.
Irini Mourtzoukou: First night at Korydallos prison and her request
Irini Mourtzoukou, according to MEGA’s report, was calm and composed, while she reportedly expressed her intention to be transferred to a psychiatric institution, something she had also mentioned in her defense memorandum. Specifically, she is located in the 6th wing of Korydallos prison, which is called the VIP wing due to the small number of cells. The 25-year-old’s cell is adjacent to those of Roula Pispirigou and the 26-year-old mother of 3-year-old Angelos who was tortured to death in Crete.
At least for the first few days, the 25-year-old will be under 24-hour surveillance by a correctional officer. However, for the first time perhaps, Irini Mourtzoukou during her transfer from police headquarters to Korydallos prison appeared visibly dejected. According to information, in her defense memorandum the 25-year-old requested to be transferred to the prison’s psychiatric facility: “(…) I should be subject to hospitalization in a psychiatric medical institution until a final decision is issued, as the most appropriate measure, through which my presence in court is ensured as well as the prevention of new crimes by me. Conversely, imposing on me the measure of temporary detention in a typical detention facility may cause multiple problems (…)”
Irini Mourtzoukou: Panagiotakis’ mother is trying to lead me to take responsibility
It is reminded that in the 19-page memorandum, referring to Panagiotakis’ death, she blames his mother, stating that Panagiotakis was the child who gave her the strength to live and overcome her psychological problems: “Panagiotakis gave me the strength to overcome the ‘darkness’ (psychiatric / psychotic / physical and not only) problems. He made me find the strength to dream again…”
She declares that she refuses any responsibility for his death, emphasizing: “I would never hurt him, I would never harm him for any reason… I state boldly that, for his death, I have no slightest responsibility / participation / cooperation”. In the memorandum, she accuses Panagiotakis’ mother of trying to burden her with responsibility: “The above […] all these months is trying to lead me to take responsibility for her child’s death, but it is impossible for me to ‘be charged’ with the death of the last hope of salvation of life, soul, my existence”.
Mourtzoukou attempts to differentiate Panagiotakis’ case from that of the other victims: “The other infants were babies, aged up to six (6) months, while Panagiotakis was a big child, aged fifteen (15) months, and the other infants were girls, while Panagiotakis was a boy”. And concludes: “It is undoubtedly that Panagiotakis ‘does not fit the murder pattern'”. She also claims that after the child’s death, his mother secretly hosted her at her home: “From the day of Panagiotis’ death (5/8/2024) until June 2025, she hosted me, secretly, at her home in Amaliada, a fact certainly incompatible with the publicly presented image of the enraged (supposedly) mother”.
In another part of the memorandum, she declares her willingness to testify fully about the circumstances of the child’s death, provided there is an official summons and security guarantee: “I cannot and am not allowed at this procedural stage […] to enter into the details of the manner, method, cause etc. of his death, but I am at the disposal of the Authorities […] to reveal everything”. The most serious point of the memorandum is that a third person plays a “catalytic role” in the case, whom she does not name for now: “Another person has played a catalytic role, whose name I will reveal only to the competent Prosecutorial / Investigative Authorities […] since I receive continuous and intense threats to my life and physical integrity”.
Irini Mourtzoukou finally declares that she is at the disposal of the authorities for full clarification of the case, so that “not the slightest point of this tragic story remains in the dark”.
