Generally clear weather is forecast for today, Monday, according to the National Meteorological Service. During midday and afternoon hours, local clouds will appear over the mainland, with the possibility of isolated showers mainly in the mountainous areas of central and northern Greece.
In the west, northwesterly winds of 3 to 5 Beaufort will prevail, while in the east they will blow with intensity of 4 to 6 Beaufort. In the central and southern Aegean, winds may strengthen locally up to 7 Beaufort.
Temperature will show a slight further increase. On the mainland it will reach 36 to 37 degrees Celsius and locally in eastern Central Greece and eastern Peloponnese up to 38 degrees. In the Ionian, up to 34 degrees Celsius are expected, while in the Eastern Aegean islands, the Dodecanese and southern Crete, temperatures will range between 35 and 36 degrees. In the rest of the island country they will reach 31 to 32 degrees.
According to Yannis Kallianos, this is not a heatwave, but the “familiar summer heat of July“, with values that in some mainland areas may reach locally up to 40 degrees Celsius.
At the same time, strengthened northerly winds (meltemia) will blow, making the coming days dangerous for wildfires.
According to the meteorologist, temperatures of 36-38°C are expected in several mainland areas of the country, while locally they may reach 39°C or 40°C, mainly:
- in Thessaly
- in Boeotia
- and in Phthiotida.
For Athens, the maximum temperatures of the week are expected to remain steady around 37-38 degrees Celsius.
Theodoros Kolydas referred to the temperature development for the rest of July in a post on “X”.
As the meteorologist noted, from 20/7 onwards, there is increasing uncertainty – mainly in the GFS. The end of the period shows low reliability, especially regarding the exact temperature value or the intensity of the heatwave.
“The ECMWF, although showing a more “tight” ensemble system and maintaining smaller spread, shows differentiation from 20/7 onwards. In the latest meteogram of Athens, until July 18 we observe that the dispersion is small, so the forecast is reliable. Therefore from July 13–19 the temperature ranges between 27–36°C, with daily fluctuations, while from July 20–22 a heat wave is likely, but with large dispersion, meaning there is high uncertainty.“, Theodoros Kolydas states in his post.
“The daily variation (min–max) is considered normal for summer, with nighttime minimums close to 26–28°C, meaning warm nights.“, the meteorologist concludes.
