The weather is showing its summer “smile” as high temperatures dominated Sunday, July 13, 2025 across mainland Greece, exceeding 38°C according to meteo.gr. The highest maximum temperature was recorded in Skala Messinia where the mercury reached 38.3 degrees Celsius.
Weather: The 8 regions with the highest temperatures
As shown in the map below, according to the automatic meteorological station network of the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr, 10 meteorological stations recorded maximum temperatures above 37°C. Most meteorological stations that recorded temperatures above 37 degrees Celsius were located in the Peloponnese, however two cases were in Thessaly (Trikala and Farsala) while the 37.4°C in Paranesti Drama stands out.
Weather: Meteorologists warn of new heat wave
The weather is getting hotter in the coming days, as temperatures are expected to reach heat wave levels. A new, intense heat wave will sweep the country and last at least one week, affecting almost all regions. After the brief respite of relative coolness that preceded it, high temperatures and strong winds are expected to create dangerous conditions, increasing the risk of fires. The heat wave is at our doorstep and increased caution is required.
Specifically, the Research Director of the Institute for Environmental Research and Sustainable Development of the National Observatory of Athens, Kostas Lagouvardos, clarified when speaking to ANA-MPA that from the coming days high temperatures exceeding 37 degrees are expected. “It will last probably 7-8 days, but it won’t be extreme temperature-wise. It will therefore tire us and will result in raising the July average values considerably,” he emphasizes.
Compared to the heat waves of previous days, Kostas Lagouvardos notes that then “the nights in cities didn’t have time to warm up“. In the new heat wave this seems to be changing, as high temperatures will be recorded at night too, making the phenomenon more intense.
Monday’s weather forecast
On Monday (14.07.2025) temperatures are expected to show a slight increase. The weather will be clear in almost the entire country although showers will occur in the northern mountains. According to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service weather forecast, clouds will appear in mainland areas from midday. Temperatures will reach 36-37°C in mainland areas and locally in eastern Central Greece and eastern Peloponnese 38 degrees. In the Ionian Sea the thermometer will show 34 degrees.
In the Eastern Aegean islands, Dodecanese and southern Crete 35-36 degrees and in the rest of the island country 31-32 degrees Celsius. Winds will blow from the northwest at 3-5 in the west, 4-6 in the east and temporarily in the central and southern Aegean locally 7 Beaufort.

- Winds: Northwestern 3-5 Beaufort.
- Temperature: From 19 to 37 degrees and in the Ionian islands up to 34 degrees Celsius. In the interior of Epirus minimum 2-4 degrees lower.
Eastern Central Greece – Evia – Eastern Peloponnese

- Winds: Northern northwestern 4-6 and temporarily locally 7 Beaufort in the east.
- Temperature: From 23 to 31 degrees Celsius. In Crete maximum will reach 33-34 degrees and in southern Crete 36 degrees Celsius.
Eastern Aegean Islands – Dodecanese
- Weather: Clear.
- Winds: From northern directions 5-6 and temporarily locally 7 Beaufort.
- Temperature: From 23 to 35-36 degrees Celsius.
Thessaly
- Weather: Generally clear. Local clouds will develop during midday and afternoon hours and isolated showers may occur in the mountains.
- Winds: Variable weak and in the Sporades from northern directions up to 4 Beaufort.
- Temperature: From 19 to 37 degrees and in the Sporades up to 32 degrees Celsius.
Orange alert tomorrow – Areas with very high fire risk
Due to heat and strengthened winds, Central Greece, Peloponnese, Crete and North Aegean islands will be on “orange” alert for fire outbreak on Sunday.
Specifically, very high fire risk is forecast tomorrow for the following areas:

- Central Greece Region (Boeotia, Evia)
- Peloponnese Region (Corinthia, Argolida)
- Crete Region (Rethymno, Heraklion, Lasithi)

Winds will blow northwestern 3-5 and locally 6 Beaufort in the Ionian in the west. In the east they will blow northern 4-6 and locally 7 Beaufort in the Aegean. Temperature will not show significant change. It will reach 36-38 degrees in mainland areas, 34-36 degrees in the Ionian, Eastern Aegean islands, Dodecanese and southern Crete and 31-33 degrees Celsius in the rest of the island country.
