The Patriot anti-aircraft missile system battery has arrived in Karpathos, strengthening Greek air defense against Iranian threats to strike American targets in retaliation for American-Israeli attacks. It should be noted that the transfer and deployment of the American-made anti-aircraft system was deemed necessary following threats from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and Hezbollah to target American interests.
Greece-Cyprus joint defense doctrine activated
The decision to transfer the Patriot systems to Karpathos was made as part of the preventive strengthening of the country’s air defense due to the turmoil prevailing in the Middle East. It should be recalled that following the activation of the Greece-Cyprus joint defense doctrine after the two drones that Cyprus dealt with on Monday at the British base in Akrotiri, the Greece-Cyprus joint defense doctrine was activated for the first time yesterday and it was decided to deploy the two frigates KIMON and PSARA to the Republic of Cyprus and two pairs of F16s, while Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias arrives in Nicosia today.
Patriot missiles arrive in Karpathos – Greek air defense strengthened
The MIM-104 Patriot anti-aircraft missile battery is being transferred to Karpathos, strengthening air defense in the southeastern Aegean. Karpathos’ geographical position, between Crete and Cyprus, allows coverage of critical air and sea corridors and functions as an advanced early warning hub.
The Patriot systems provide capabilities to intercept aircraft, UAVs, cruise missiles and tactical ballistic threats, reinforcing a layered defense architecture against saturation scenarios.
The Greek Air Force has a total of six Patriot batteries in its arsenal. One of them has been leased to Saudi Arabia, where the necessary Air Force personnel have been deployed to operate the anti-aircraft system. Of the remaining five Patriot batteries, some provide air coverage for Athens and Thessaloniki and other critically important infrastructure, creating an impenetrable anti-aircraft “umbrella”.
