The 18-year-old who allegedly killed his 50-year-old father on Leros was released after his testimony before the Kos investigator on Tuesday, March 3rd. The fatal incident occurred when he threw a metal object, most likely a cylinder piston, at his father’s head. The investigator agreed with the prosecutor’s recommendation, however the 18-year-old must attend psychological counseling sessions at the state therapeutic center of Leros, according to dimokratiki.gr. The young man’s detailed description of the fight in Alinda Kerulas area of the island, which resulted in his father’s death, brought back the details of the February 26th incident. The youth had reportedly previously involved both “The Smile of the Child” organization and police authorities in similar incidents.
Leros: Years of abuse and working since age 7
In his testimony, the 17-year-old claimed there was no intent and described the incident as an accident within a long-term problematic relationship. He mentioned conditions of tension from a young age, working at the garage from age 7, and being monitored by a child psychiatrist, according to dimokratiki.gr.
Regarding the day his father died, he described morning irritation, receiving insults, and after the initial blow from the cylinder piston, throwing it toward his father without looking, resulting in hitting the back of his head. After the injury, he claimed he attempted to provide help and called on bystanders to seek medical assistance.
The father-son fights had been ongoing for years and were officially documented in reports made to both “The Smile of the Child” and competent police authorities.
Leros: He presented it as an accident
The 18-year-old allegedly took the tool that fatally wounded his father after the latter had attacked him. The young man asked garage workers who were not present during the incident. However, witness testimonies show him leaving for a few minutes before returning aware of the situation. It’s also said that the 50-year-old was conscious and even asked for water. The teenager reportedly claimed it was an accident, but was arrested one day later after his father’s death was confirmed at the hospital of Leros. He actually pointed out the cylinder piston and surrendered it. Additionally, clothes and shoes were confiscated for forensic laboratory examination. The case file also includes a mobile phone and recording device, which will be examined as digital evidence.
The young man spoke about constant fights and abusive behavior by his father toward him. He mentioned working at the garage since age 7, while being monitored by a child psychiatrist. The risk of developing deviant behavior proved, as emphasized, to be true. His father also reportedly suffered beatings from him.
The mother’s testimony
Before the 17-year-old’s testimony, his mother gave lengthy testimony, according to dimokratiki.gr. The mother spoke about living conditions, the family environment and a history of tensions that, according to case file evidence, went back years. The family also has two other children, aged 5 and 10. The 17-year-old was charged with manslaughter in a calm mental state. After the charges were filed, he was escorted by police before the Kos Investigator where he was given time to testify.
The timeline
It was the afternoon of February 26th in the Alinda Kerulas area of Leros, inside a car garage where father and son worked. The two had an intense argument, according to the case file, and the victim allegedly threw tools. According to the same information, the cylinder piston initially hit the minor in the right side of his abdomen, and subsequently he allegedly picked it up and hurled it at the 49-year-old.
The minor was arrested on February 27th and pointed out and surrendered the cylinder piston. Additionally, clothes and shoes were confiscated for forensic laboratory examination. The case file also includes a mobile phone and recording device, which will be examined as digital evidence.
Testimonies from workers who were at the garage are particularly important. It’s reported that the minor left briefly and returned a few minutes later visibly upset, asking for an ambulance to be called and saying his father was hurt. It’s also recorded that the victim was conscious for a short time and asked for water.
