The Hellenic Navy has released a photograph showing the Belharra frigate “Kimon” sailing toward Cyprus. Notably, the photograph was taken from the deck of the frigate “Psara,” which is also sailing toward Cyprus.
It should be recalled that on Monday evening (02/03), the frigates “Kimon” and “Psara” departed from Salamis Naval Base for Cyprus, as part of reinforcing preventive measures being taken for its defense due to developments in the Middle East and the broader region.
En route to Cyprus: frigates “Kimon” and Psara
The frigates “Kimon” and “Psara” began their journey to Cyprus to provide defensive support to the state following Iran’s attack on a British military base in Akrotiri on Monday, March 2. Cyprus’s deputy government spokesman, Yiannis Antoniou, said the frigates are expected to arrive at the island on Tuesday, March 3, and will anchor south of Limassol and Paphos respectively.
These are not random moves, as he explained that the goal of this deployment with Greek frigates and Greek fighter aircraft is to protect the energy center in Vasilikos, as well as the security of Paphos Airport in Cyprus. It is noted that the frigate “Psara” carries the Greek-made anti-drone system “Centaurus,” while the Belharra “Kimon” has advanced digital capabilities and air defense systems.
