Greece’s geographical position in the Mediterranean makes the US military bases it hosts extremely important for controlling the entire region. Today, the main facility operating officially is the naval base of Souda in Crete, while new strategic locations in Larissa, Volos and Alexandroupoli have recently been added. The history of American military presence in Greek territory begins in 1947 and continues dynamically to this day.

The historical development of American military presence
Defense cooperation relations between Athens and Washington officially began in February 1947, when the US Air Force established itself at Ellinikon Airport. This first move marked the beginning of a long period of military cooperation that would shape the country’s geopolitical character.
In October 1953, just one year after Greece’s NATO membership, the Papagos government signed the first official agreement for the development of American military installations. This agreement granted the United States extensive rights, including the ability to install military units, free movement of troops without controls and extraterritorial rights. The four initial locations were Ellinikon, Nea Makri, Souda and Heraklion.
Where US military bases in Greece are located today
Souda in Crete today constitutes the main and officially recognized American military installation on Greek soil. This base has evolved into a superbase, concentrating activities previously conducted at other installations that closed, such as those at Nea Makri, Ellinikon and Gournes. It is governed by the Greek-American base agreement that came into force in 1990 and is renewed annually.
Crete’s strategic position in the heart of the Mediterranean makes Souda an essential support point for the US Fleet and other military units for operations in all directions. Additionally, the installation is operationally connected with British bases in Cyprus, creating an integrated control network for the eastern Mediterranean.
New strategic locations and operational centers
The Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreement (MDCA) radically transformed the character of American installations in Greece. From simple refueling and support points, they evolved into cutting-edge operational centers with permanent presence.
Now, besides Souda, US armed forces maintain official and permanent presence at three additional strategic points:
- Larissa: Used as a launch base for state-of-the-art unmanned aircraft (UAVs)
- Volos: Hosts support facilities for naval and air operations
- Alexandroupoli: Serves as a key point for operations in the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East
The strategic importance of US military bases
American military installations in Greece ensure better control over both the Mediterranean and Middle East. This control is significantly enhanced by AWACS flying radars stationed at the NATO base in Aktio, providing early warning and surveillance capabilities.
The installations in Larissa, Volos and Alexandroupoli function as forward bases for technologically advanced unmanned aircraft, warships and combat helicopters. The geographical distribution of these bases allows coverage of a vast area, from the Balkans to the Middle East and North Africa.
