A cargo ship carrying 520 undocumented migrants who were rescued in the early morning hours of Wednesday 9/07 by a fishing vessel in the maritime area 17 nautical miles south of Gavdos has been docked at Lavrio port since the early hours of Thursday 10/07. As announced by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, the rescued migrants were not transported to the port of Chora Sfakion as initially announced, but were directed to Lavrio port.
Migrants: Transported to Lavrio under Coast Guard escort
Their transport was carried out by a Bahamas-flagged cargo ship, which they had boarded during the operation and under the escort of an Open Sea Patrol Vessel of the Coast Guard.
The decision for direct transport of the migrants to Attica was made amid continuous migrant flows to the southern coasts of Crete, as well as the inability of Crete’s accommodation facilities to respond adequately.
