The Evros region has been placed on “red alert” status following intense rainfall in recent days. The Evros River has overflowed, causing embankments to collapse and torrential waters to flood agricultural areas, even reaching the yards of the first residential buildings. Early this morning, an emergency alert was sent via 112 to residents and visitors in the Lavara area, in the Municipality of Soufli in the Evros Regional Unit. According to competent authorities, the river’s water level has risen to dangerous levels, causing its overflow in the area.
Citizens are called to remain on heightened alert and strictly follow authorities’ instructions to ensure their safety.

Civil Protection and local authorities are monitoring the situation’s development and preparing for potential evacuations or other needs. Evros River overflow is not a rare phenomenon, but current conditions make the situation particularly dangerous, requiring heightened attention and immediate response from everyone.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis visits Evros today
Amid the situation prevailing in Evros, Kyriakos Mitsotakis is traveling to the region today, Wednesday (25/02). In this context, the prime minister will visit the Kipi Border Station, where upgrade and expansion works are underway, and will travel to areas affected by recent flooding phenomena.
Evros regional unit under “red code”
As announced by the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, the General Secretariat of Civil Protection has again placed the Evros Regional Unit of the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Region under “Red Code” mobilization status from yesterday Tuesday 24/02/2026 until Friday 27/02/2026, as according to the regional governor and related Risk Assessment Committee opinion, a high risk of flooding phenomena is expected in the area due to rising water levels and Evros River overflow.
In this context, as the ministry emphasizes in a related announcement, the Municipality and Region are called to immediately convene Local Operational Civil Protection Coordination Bodies and Regional Operational Civil Protection Coordination Bodies.
The situation in Pythio Didymoteicho, after the significant rise in river level which shortly before midnight exceeded the “psychological limit” of 7 meters reaching 7.15 m., remains critical.
Although the level has receded to 6.75 m., creating relative de-escalation, the danger remains
Waters have flooded the plains and entered the settlement through the peripheral road passing through the village edge, reaching the first residential yards.
Regional teams, Fire Service crews and construction machinery are operating on site, with interventions including soil dumping and attempts to seal manholes through which waters are estimated to have passed toward the settlement. No injuries or residential damage have been reported so far.
In Pythio plains, next to the village, the scene is particularly severe. The railway line and station are covered by water, as is the local police station. In some areas water height is estimated to exceed 2.5 meters, approaching 2.6-2.7 m., with a characteristic example being a basketball hoop about three meters high that has been almost completely covered.
