With a festive spirit, Lenten tables and open outdoor events, most municipalities in Attica welcome Clean Monday, both within and outside the Athens basin. Parks, groves, squares and beaches are transformed into meeting points for young and old, with free lagana bread, bean soup, fasting foods, live music, dancing and – of course – the traditional kite flying.
This year’s program features events that combine traditional festivities with family activities, while impressive details are not lacking, such as the giant lagana breads being prepared in Peristeri and Heliopolis.
Athens city center and classic meeting spots
Once again, Philopappos Hill serves as a constant point of reference for Athenians. From morning, the area fills with kites, while musical events and treats create a festive atmosphere under the Attic sky. A similar atmosphere prevails in the city’s large parks and groves, where municipalities have organized comprehensive programs for the whole family.
From the western to the northern and southern suburbs, almost every municipality has scheduled its own Koulouma celebrations. At Mother’s Grove, Pefkakia Park, Rock Theater, Egaleo Grove, Pani Hill, Fix Estate, Halikaki Park, Flisvos Park, Goudi Park, and dozens of other locations, events include traditional and folk music, dance groups, participation of cultural associations and activities for children.
Special emphasis is placed on young visitors, with kite-making workshops, games, entertainers, face painting and interactive activities, so that the day becomes a complete experience of joy and creativity.
Sea, mountains and… giant lagana breads
In coastal municipalities, the events take on a special character, with the sea as a backdrop and kite flying next to the waves. Meanwhile, in several areas of West and East Attica, Koulouma celebrations are combined with local customs, participation of associations and live musical groups. This year’s impressive record-breaking lagana breads stand out, with weight and dimensions that catch the eye and become a focal point of the events, adding another reason to attend the municipal celebrations.
Clean Monday in Attica is celebrated once again openly, collectively and without exclusions. The municipal events give residents and visitors the opportunity to enjoy tradition, get out into nature, have fun with music and dancing, and share the Lenten table in an atmosphere of joy and carefreeness.
