The interrogation that led to the unprecedented confession of 25-year-old Irini Mourtzoukou lasted almost three hours. The young woman admitted to murdering her 1.5-year-old sister in 2014, when she was only 14 years old, her close friend and godmother Katerina’s daughter in 2021, her second daughter in October 2023, while claiming she accidentally “crushed” her first daughter in her sleep in June 2022. According to information from parapolitika.gr, she denied murdering little Panagiotis in August 2024, and also denied attempting to murder her partner in between. However, it appears that the “key” to reaching the confession of these heinous acts was the death of her little sister, Zoi-Iliana.
After the arrest warrant issued by the regular investigator of Patras, the homicide officers had left another “ace” up their sleeve, with the purpose of extracting the confession. During previous actions, the police had left the case of Irini Mourtzoukou’s little sister completely out of any conversation. Zoi-Iliana who was “lost” in 2014 in Argolida, where the family was living at the time.
Irini Mourtzoukou until the evening of last Tuesday (8/7) did not admit to any of her acts. However, today at dawn the police played the card of the first chronological prosecutor’s order for preliminary investigation regarding the death of her little sister. This new cycle of pressure “broke” the 25-year-old. The testimony regarding the loss of her 1.5-year-old sister took the form of question-and-answer sessions and after increasing pressure, Irini Mourtzoukou “cracked”.
Irini Mourtzoukou: The pressure point that triggered the developments
Irini Mourtzoukou’s relationship with her mother Popi Anagnostopoulou was the pressure point that triggered the new developments. The young woman admitted that her relationship with her mother was what filled her with rage and hatred, capable of leading to the murder of even small children. After at least one hour of questioning today (9/7) at dawn, the scenario began to change form. There she admitted to murdering her sister Zoi-Iliana as she reportedly emphasized “every time I fought with my mother, I lost control. I wanted to kill someone“. Irini Mourtzoukou considers her mother responsible for her reactions, as she reportedly was jealous of her and constantly sought her attention.
This was the beginning of the evil. The 25-year-old according to information described to the police a state of instability, as there were things that triggered her anger and demanded an outburst. “The devil took over me, I didn’t know what I was doing,” she reportedly said during her confession. “My mother is to blame for everything. Whenever I fought, I ‘locked up’, my eye ‘turned’ and I wanted to do harm. I don’t remember how I did it, I wasn’t holding anything in my hands. I didn’t realize what I was doing, I understood afterwards,” she reportedly said initially and at another point she reportedly said about her second daughter: “My mother had annoyed me, we were inside the hospital and she had driven me crazy. She was asking me for loans. I took it out on the child, I had too many nerves with her. I didn’t consider the other woman who was inside the hospital room“.
And if Irini killed her sister and her second child, due to her alleged claim of lack of attention from her mother, the other homicides had a different character. Information indicates that the 25-year-old did not give a detailed description to the police about how she killed each of the children. She dwelt considerably on the loss of unbaptized Zoi-Ioanna, her first child, only 19 days old, emphasizing that this came from negligence. That she crushed her in her sleep with the result that the infant “burst”.
“I was sleeping with the baby next to me. I accidentally crushed her in my sleep and the baby ‘burst’. When I woke up I realized the baby wasn’t breathing. I tried to do something but nothing could be done,” she reportedly said and continued referring to the case of Katerina’s daughter: “I was very annoyed and jealous of Katerina’s relationship. I couldn’t contain my anger. I took it out on the child,” she reportedly emphasized.
