The municipality of Aegina has been declared in a state of emergency as the water is unsuitable for all uses. Specifically, as stated on Parapolitika 90.1 and the “Morning Departure” show with Eris Panagou, Vassilis Mousouleas, President of the Cultural Association of Aegina “Kapodistrias,” explained that due to a rupture in the pipeline connecting the island to EYDAP, the municipality is drawing water from wells that is salty and unhygienic, while analyses revealed it contains bacteria. He said the problem arose in mid-December 2025 and there are assurances it will be restored by the end of February.

Aegina: Reports of skin and eye irritation
The problem affects approximately 15,000 permanent residents of Aegina, some of whom, according to ERT, report skin and eye irritation. They are forced to use exclusively bottled water, at significantly increased cost. It should be noted that crowds gathered on Wednesday (4/2/26) outside the Municipal Council hall of Aegina in protest while the Municipal Council was in session, which passed a resolution declaring Aegina in a state of emergency. The water problem began on December 15 and, as mentioned, has not been resolved yet. According to the municipality, the island’s current needs reach 4,000 tons of water daily, while approximately 1,000 tons per day are being transported with assistance from the Region and the Navy, aiming for immediate restoration of water supply.
