Shock has gripped public opinion following the brutal murder that occurred on Sunday morning (25/1) in Glyfada, when a 46-year-old man stabbed his 79-year-old father multiple times, while in 2014 he had killed his mother in the same way. Shortly after 8:00 AM, the Emergency Response unit received a call about a domestic violence incident on Gytheiou Street in Glyfada, which resulted in a person’s fatal injury. Police officers rushed to the scene where they found a dead 79-year-old man, who was located inside the trunk of his vehicle. At the scene was also the perpetrator of the murder, the elderly man’s son, who was in possession of the murder weapon (a knife).
How and why the Glyfada parricide was released after murdering his mother – How many days he spent in the psychiatric hospital
On March 27, 2014, the 46-year-old had brutally murdered his 59-year-old mother inside the bathroom of their home in Upper Glyfada. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison, but on April 24, 2018, by order of the Piraeus Prosecutor’s Office, taking advantage of the Paraskevopoulos law, he was released with restrictive conditions requiring him to appear every 1st and 16th of each month at the police station of his residence. On the same day of his release, the prosecutor had ordered his confinement to Dromokaitio Psychiatric Hospital, without it being known when he was discharged.
The 46-year-old was released by order of the Piraeus Court prosecutor, with suspension of the remainder of his sentence, which amounted to 7 years, 9 months and 24 days. The decision was based on the provisions of article 43, paragraphs 3, 4 and 7, of law 4489/2017, that is, the modified form of the Paraskevopoulos law, which allowed the release of prisoners after serving half their sentence with beneficial calculation. The 46-year-old was released, but as shown in the document, it was judged that he could not return to his previous life, as he was considered “dangerous to himself and his environment.” Thus, in execution of a relevant order by the Piraeus Court prosecutor dated May 2, 2018, he was taken the same day to Dromokaitio Hospital “for admission and hospitalization.”
Because, as stated in the document, he was deemed dangerous to himself and those around him, he was transferred to Dromokaitio for psychiatric evaluation. At Dromokaitio he was initially hospitalized for 11 days and then went home. However, after an incident, he was taken back to the psychiatric hospital and this time was hospitalized for about 1 month. Immediately after the end of his hospitalization period at Dromokaitio, the 46-year-old was released with restrictive conditions, which would be lifted on February 27, 2026.
Glyfada parricide: “He had premeditated the murder,” say relatives of the 46-year-old
Meanwhile, a close family relative revealed to Mega that the 46-year-old perpetrator had premeditated the murder to return to prison: “Now he was supposed to appear at the police station for the last time in February, early February, and then he would be completely free. He would have no restrictions and he went and did this thing. They didn’t live together, he didn’t live with his father at all. In fact, he didn’t even speak to him. They didn’t have good relations. He rented out his house on January 1st and we even asked him why he was renting it out, where would he go and he wouldn’t tell us.”
“He intended to commit this murder. That’s why he rented out the house, cancelled his mobile phone. We couldn’t find him anywhere, he had disappeared. ‘I won’t have a mobile phone’ he says, ‘you won’t be able to find me anywhere’. He had planned to remain like this, without clothes, without a house, without anything to go back to prison again. In fact, we thought he would go to a monastery because he wouldn’t tell us where he would go, because he gave away his clothes, his things, he gave everything away,” says a close family relative. “(His dead mother) they didn’t let us see her because he had butchered her. We wanted to see her at the morgue where she was. They didn’t let us, she was in terrible condition and then the funeral home tried for hours to fix her so that the woman wouldn’t be like that so someone could see her at the funeral,” she adds.
Another relative states: “He had premeditated murdering his father and knew very well he would go back to prison. He intended to do what he had done in the past. The murder happened on March 27, 2014. He had revealed that he wanted to kill 10 others. He got out of prison around 2018, in April. His father contributed to this and it proved he was very wrong. He tried excessively to get him out earlier than he should have.” “His medications were renewed, unfortunately I can’t know if he was taking his medications, he told me he was taking them. Once he had been admitted to Dromokaitio, some incident happened on the street. He was hospitalized for about 15-20 days and was discharged again. His father took him. He lived with his father until about 2022-23 when he suddenly left and lived alone,” he added.
The murdered father’s last words: “My child, don’t kill me anymore, I’m dead”
“Holy Mary, help me, save me! My child, I’m dead now, don’t kill me anymore.” These were the last words of the 80-year-old who died at the hands of his 46-year-old son.
The Greek Police announcement about the Glyfada murder
Regarding an incident of fatal injury to a person in the early hours of today, Sunday January 25, 2026, in the Glyfada area, by a relative who was arrested, the Headquarters of the Hellenic Police announces the following:
At about 08:10 a person called the Emergency Response telephone center reporting a domestic violence incident, resulting in the fatal injury of the victim.
Police officers immediately went to the scene, where they found a fatally injured person inside the luggage compartment of a vehicle, while at the scene they also located the perpetrator (son of the victim), who, according to his family environment, suffers from psychological problems, as well as the sharp object he used, which was confiscated.
As established, the perpetrator, on March 28, 2014, had gone to a Police Station and confessed to the fatal injury of his mother, similarly with a sharp object, resulting in his arrest.
After the formation of a relevant case file, he was taken to the competent prosecutor and investigator and was deemed temporarily detained, while in 2018 he was released with restrictive conditions, among which he had to appear at a local Police Station twice a month.
The perpetrator normally complied with the restrictive conditions imposed on him (he had appeared at the Police Station within the current month), while since then he had not been involved again in any crime.
Preliminary investigation of the incident is being conducted by the Southeastern Attica Crime Detection and Investigation Subdivision.
