Ano Glyfada continues to count its wounds after the severe storm that left behind extensive destruction and the tragic death of a 56-year-old philologist, just meters from her home. In his statements, the uncle of the unfortunate woman characterized her death as “state murder,” placing blame on the municipality, which he identified as primarily responsible for the tragic incident. “My niece is not alive because someone in power took her life. It’s murder, don’t you understand? The Constitution states in Article 5, paragraph 2 that the State must ensure the safety of every citizen. What safety did my niece have? At the point where she was trying to cross to enter her house? There are two roads in the area that start from Hymettus and this problem happens continuously. It’s murder with the Municipality as the moral perpetrator. State murder. She drowned 10 meters from her house in 20 centimeters of water because it was a stream that started from Hymettus and flowed down. They closed it and turned it into an apartment building. And that’s not enough, they haven’t taken the necessary measures to prevent what happened,” he said characteristically on the show “Truths with Zina.”
He described his niece as an excellent scientist and a person with an angelic soul, loved by everyone. Her parents are in a tragic state, unable to believe the martyric way their daughter was lost.
Ano Glyfada storm: Shocking testimonies – “She finished work and was told her house was flooding”
The testimonies about how the woman lost her life in one of the most expensive suburbs of Attica are shocking. Despite the efforts of people who saw her disappear before their eyes into the torrential current that swept everything in its path on Kyrillos Methodios Street. “I thought I saw her bag, but it was her,” said a woman who was in the area.
“I mistook her for a bag. I was saying Christina lost her bag but it wasn’t her bag, it was Christina,” she told Kontra Channel. “We were inside the house and we could see her from the window. She went to cross the street. My boss shouted at her not to do it,” she continued and added: “She didn’t make it in time, she didn’t hear us either. With the word ‘don’t’ the current took her, swept her away and carried her under the car. We were watching from the window and couldn’t do anything. My boss came out, other neighbors came out from next door. They tried to do something with the car, but they couldn’t. Until the Fire Department came and the result was what it was. The woman was finishing work and was told she had to come because her house was flooding,” she added.
When she returned to her house, the waters had already swollen and brought stones, wood and various other debris from the mountain. According to testimonies, the woman wanted to go to her house. She tried to cross the street that had turned into a regular river and then was swept away and trapped under a car, which had also been swept away by the torrent.
Residents rushed to help her. Her torso was trapped under the car and her legs were sticking out. Despite their superhuman efforts, they couldn’t free her in time and watched her die before their eyes. When Fire Department personnel finally freed her, an ambulance transported her unconscious to the hospital, where her death was confirmed.
The woman was a mother of one child, while her students and everyone who knew her are shocked. Meteorologists had warned that the phenomena that would hit Attica on Wednesday would be particularly dangerous. Until early afternoon the phenomena were not of great intensity, but from 5:00 PM onwards the situation began to become more serious. The storm mainly affected the southern suburbs, but problems were caused throughout the Athens basin.
