The lawyer of Maria Karystianou, Stelios Sourlas, attempts to defend her position on abortions, questioning why a personal opinion is considered extreme in a democratic society. In his statements to ONE and the show “Here*”, Mr. Sourlas emphasized that the greatest evil is the murder of an unborn child, while the birth of a child that initially may not have been wanted cannot be considered equally serious. According to him, from the moment conception has taken place, “it’s not about what we want, but nature has already proceeded.”

Maria Karystianou’s lawyer on abortions: “Do women’s rights supersede those of an unborn child?”
Mr. Sourlas reminded that since 1986, when abortions were permitted in the country, conditions have changed significantly, and therefore discussions around the issue should take into account today’s circumstances. As he mentioned, Ms. Karystianou questions whether the right to abortion should remain non-negotiable, while placing the balance of rights in the foreground: do women’s rights supersede or not those of an unborn child? He described abortion as an act that, in his opinion, constitutes murder of a human being who cannot defend themselves, characterizing the procedure as horrific. At the same time, he pointed out the need not to cause division over an issue that can and should be put to democratic dialogue. In this context, Mr. Sourlas emphasized that expressing personal views on moral and legal issues is a fundamental right, and that public discussion should not stigmatize those who express different opinions.
At another point in the discussion, Mr. Sourlas said that democracy has no dilemmas. “Why not?” he wondered in response to a question about whether we should hold annual referendums on monarchy, and continued that this means direct democracy.
