The Fire Service forces were called to fight a very tough battle yesterday, Thursday (3/7), in order to bring under control the major wildfire that broke out in Pikermi, at the junction of Marathon Avenue and Arionos Street, just before the Rafina intersection. The Orange Press Agency video captures in 114 seconds the laborious efforts to contain the large fire front, which quickly gained significant dimensions.
The fire is now subsiding, however authorities remain on alert for possible reignitions. Police carried out 57 evacuations, while damage has been recorded to homes and vehicles. From today (4/7), inspections begin in the affected areas to assess the damage. Fire service forces continue to monitor the area, wetting smoldering spots and remaining on standby for possible flare-ups. According to the mayor of Spata, Dimitris Markos, at least 5-6 houses and several cars have been burned. According to ERT reports, at the TEVE Building Cooperative, in the Himeros Pefkos area, at least 2-3 houses were completely destroyed, while 3-4 more suffered serious damage. Some less serious incidents were recorded in warehouses, tile roofs and auxiliary spaces.
