Meteorologists Elina Karetsou and Christina Rigou predict intense cold with unusually low seasonal temperatures on “Parapolitika 90.1“, resulting in frost at the beginning of the week. However, the cold will be “express” and temperatures will rise from Wednesday. As for whether we’ll see snow in Attica, the meteorologists are categorical: light snowfall will occur on Mount Parnitha.

Elina Karetsou: “Wintry weather” – Where heavy snowfall will occur
Specifically, as Elina Karetsou said on Alexandros Klossa’s show “First Morning”, today’s main characteristic is that we expect intense bitter cold throughout the country with very low temperatures. We’ll also have some quite extensive snowfall and strong northerly winds. Generally, today’s weather will be particularly wintry. Some areas will have plenty of sunshine, but others will experience heavy snowfall and rain.
In detail: The most important factor is the very significant temperature drop. With quite low maximum daily temperatures, we’re naturally at very low levels for the season. In the northern parts of the country today we’ll reach 5 degrees Celsius and the minimums will be around -5 degrees. In the eastern mainland areas up to 6-8 degrees. In the western Cyclades and Crete up to 9-13. In the Dodecanese above 12-14 for maximums. Now, for minimums, beyond the north where we’ll range from -3 to -5, in the central mainland we’ll see -3 to 0. So we’re talking about very low values. In the northwest we’ll have minimums of -6 to -10. In Athens, which started the day at 3-4 degrees, but it will drop more at night, meaning we’ll see negative temperatures tomorrow morning in the basin, emphasized Christina Rigou, who specifically mentioned total frost for Western Macedonia regions.
The key point is what we’re discussing – that we’ll have very low temperatures, meaning frost with negative temperature values, which in the north, mainly in the northwest, will be total. This means that during the day, the thermometer won’t be above 0 at all. It will remain at negative values in the northwestern parts of the country.
Now, the next characteristic of the day is snowfall, which is expected mainly in mountainous and semi-mountainous parts of mainland Greece and in areas with lower altitudes, around 300-400 meters, while in parts of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace we’ll have snow at slightly lower levels, at altitudes of 100 meters.
Moving on, in Attica, since various reports have circulated in recent days, we expect some weak snowfall, mainly in mountainous areas, particularly on Mount Parnitha. Generally, we don’t expect anything significant here. Temperature will range from 3 to 7 degrees today. In the early morning hours today, Parnitha had -5. Snowfall on Parnitha will be weak, while it snowed this morning in Vilia, northwest of the prefecture, and some flakes fell in Agios Stefanos, Stamata and Drosia. However, from midday onwards phenomena weaken with intense sunshine.
Strong north-northwesterly winds, also in the Attica region, 5 to 7 on the Beaufort scale, will weaken towards evening, so extra caution is needed.
Nevertheless, in the coming days, although from tomorrow the weather will generally improve from the afternoon, tomorrow will still be cold. In short, this is express cold. The temperature drop started yesterday from the north and is gradually extending to the rest of the country. From Wednesday we’ll see a further temperature rise and the weather will begin to soften.
Christina Rigou: The intense cold will last 24 hours at most
In the same vein, Christina Rigou, speaking on the show “Opposite Microphones” with Vassilis Skouris and Sotiris Xenakis, emphasized that such intense cold will last “24 hours at most”. She also presented temperature fluctuations, saying: “We had 20 degrees in Athens on Saturday, today the thermometer will reach up to 7, and from Thursday again 16-17 degrees”. Finally, we don’t expect rain after this weekend rich in phenomena, where we saw tornadoes, wind speeds in Alexandroupoli that reached 155 kilometers. These were downdrafts in a storm that reached these extreme speeds. It’s something very difficult to predict during this phenomenon.
