Strike action for an indefinite period began today, Wednesday January 7, 2026, jointly declared by the largest trade union organizations of farmers’ markets vendors in Greece. Specifically, the decision was announced by the Confederation of Greek Farmers’ Markets, the Pan-Attic Federation of Farmers’ Market Vendors’ Unions, the Panhellenic Federation of Producers and Vendors of Farmers’ Markets, the Federation of Regional Farmers’ Markets of Attica, as well as all other Federations of professionals and producers operating in the country’s farmers’ markets.
According to the announcement from the Confederation of Farmers’ Markets, “This mobilization is the only way forward. Despite the fact that producers and self-employed farmers offer their products at low prices, the policies being followed burden costs at every stage of distribution,” while clarifying that the Confederation stands “alongside farmers and agricultural mobilizations.”
Nationwide indefinite strike in farmers’ markets: The demands
As highlighted, the basic demands of the strike action include addressing high prices in farmers’ markets, supporting farmers through reduced production costs, abolishing the presumptive taxation method, immediate withdrawal of the additional 10% taxation, the electronic dispatch note issue, as well as modifications to Law 4849/2021, which, as emphasized, “creates serious bottlenecks and does not respond to the actual operating conditions of farmers’ markets.”
“The nationwide indefinite strike sends a message in every direction. Farmers’ markets support households, farmers and consumers. We will not allow them to become victims of policies that lead to high prices, market concentration and devaluation of the primary sector. Farmers’ markets are and will remain first Popular and then Markets,” the announcement emphasizes.
POSPLA: Three-day mobilization program as part of the strike
A three-day program of strike mobilizations was announced by the Pan-Attic Federation of Farmers’ Market Vendors’ Unions (POSPLA), as part of the indefinite strike in farmers’ markets beginning January 7.
According to a social media post, the mobilization program begins Wednesday January 7 with a gathering at Syntagma Square at 09:30 and a march to the Ministry of Finance on Nikis Street. Thursday January 8 features a scheduled gathering at the central gate of the Wholesale Market in Rentis at 08:00, while Friday January 9 will see a motorized march with gathering point at Kifisou and Lenorman (on the side road at Panagitsa) and destination at the Afidnes toll stations.
As POSPLA emphasizes in its post, the farmers’ markets institution celebrates 100 years of operation, with its future remaining uncertain.
