After dozens of bureaucratic and financial obstacles, the State as a whole is ready to proceed with implementing the plan to install “smart” digital (AI) cameras for traffic code enforcement. Those who aren’t ready are the Athens drivers, as they rushed to break every violation record in just four days. And of course, these findings relate to the pilot operation of the cameras over just a four-day period. Nearly 2,500 violations were recorded by cameras at the 8 locations where they have been installed by the Ministry of Digital Governance.
Over 2,500 AI cameras expected to be installed
Clearly, with just 8 cameras, no problem will be solved. That’s why the ministry’s efforts will intensify over the next period. Sources from Digital Governance report that a total of over 2,500 cameras will be installed on roads and buses to record those driving in bus lanes. 2,000 of these will be gradually installed on highways and major intersections, while the remaining 500 on buses.

Multi-angle photography and video recording capabilities
It should be noted that these cameras will have the capability to take photos from five different angles while simultaneously recording video to create a complete case file, which can be appealed within approximately two weeks. These will be installed gradually by summer, as authorities await the results of tenders set by the Ministries of Digital Governance and Transport.
Furthermore, approximately 350 cameras are expected to be installed by the Attica Region. Since last week, a single-digit number of these have been installed on the coastal road and in Athens city center, though these use different technology and will not operate with Artificial Intelligence systems.

All cameras will send data regarding violators to the Greek Police Operation Centers, which will issue the fines. These will essentially arrive on our phones through the Gov app and each citizen’s personal Wallet. In fact, the first tickets will start being sent from 2026. We should also mention that cameras are expected to be installed at high-risk locations, as determined by Greek Police data. Authorities maintain a massive archive that highlights the most dangerous spots, locations where the most accidents and fatalities have occurred, as well as dangerous driving behaviors.
A major issue was the management of personal data. However, a solution was found through excellent cooperation between the ministries and the independent Personal Data Protection Authority. Therefore, photos will undergo on-site processing (blurring) while this data will be managed by a specific entity.
