ADEDY announced a 24-hour nationwide strike for today, Tuesday December 16, 2025, directing its protest against the new state budget being debated and voted on in Parliament. The mobilization includes participation from the Panhellenic Federation of Local Government Organization Employees (POE-OTA), while ADEDY simultaneously expresses full support for agricultural mobilizations and blockades set up across the country.
According to ADEDY’s announcement, the strike targets “against the budget of war and economic bleeding of the working majority,” with the Federation calling for mass participation in strike rallies. “Everyone on December 16 to the strike demonstrations of Federations, Labor Centers and unions, against the state budget and at the farmers’ blockades,” it characteristically emphasizes.
December 16 strike: POE-OTA participation and Syntagma Square rally
In a separate announcement, POE-OTA calls on Local Government Organization employees to participate in the 24-hour nationwide strike and the protest rally scheduled for 11:00 AM at Syntagma Square. The Federation notes that borrowing policies don’t address problems but temporarily postpone them, burdening citizens with municipal fee increases without corresponding service improvements. It’s also emphasized that basic social functions are gradually being outsourced to contractors and private companies, with negative consequences for both workers and citizens.
Teachers’ participation in today’s ADEDY strike
Primary and Secondary Education teachers will also participate in ADEDY’s strike mobilization. As OLME states in its announcement, “teachers normally participate in the public sector strike by ADEDY on December 16, within the framework of collective decisions of the public sector union movement and struggles to defend labor, wage and social rights.” Meanwhile, OLME calls for mass participation, clarifying that any contrary information is “inaccurate and misleading.”
Municipalities closed – What applies to public transportation
At the same time, municipalities across the country will remain closed, following a decision by the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE), as part of symbolic mobilization on the day of voting for the 2026 State Budget. KEDE calls on elected officials to be “present” at the protest rally scheduled for 12:00 PM outside Parliament, with the main demand being strengthened state funding for local authorities.
Due to the mobilization, municipal administrative and financial services will not operate. However, several municipalities have announced that social structures, such as nurseries, KAPI centers and other social services, will be exempt from the measure, with relevant announcements on their official websites.
Regarding public transportation, there is no official information so far about workers’ participation in today’s strike. It should be noted, however, that bus workers have pre-announced a work stoppage for tomorrow, Wednesday December 17, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The last routes are expected to run before 10:00 AM, while circulation will resume after 6:00 PM.
