The countdown to Christmas has begun and the Athens Commercial Association has announced the recommended holiday store hours for 2025. Starting Thursday, December 11, the operating schedule that will remain in effect until New Year’s Eve goes into force.
Which Sundays stores will be open
According to the Athens Commercial Association, stores in Athens will remain open on the last three Sundays of the year – December 14, 21, and 28 – so consumers can comfortably complete their shopping.
The schedule is indicative and optional, with each business having the ability to adjust its hours within the limits set by legislation
- Monday–Saturday 06:00–21:00
- Sunday 11:00–20:00
It should be noted that on Christmas Day (25/12), December 26, and January 1, stores will remain closed due to public holidays. From Saturday, January 3, 2026, stores return to their normal hours.

What applies to employees
- For Sunday work, a 75% wage increase is provided
- If employment does not exceed 5 hours, no additional day off is required
- When hours exceed this limit, the rest day is provided mandatorily within the same week, according to Law 5157/2024
