The severe Byron storm system -combined with the intense weather phenomena of the previous period- may have overall affected Attica, flooding streets and infrastructure, however according to the latest data it appears to have given a small “relief” to the Athens basin’s water reserves, particularly regarding Lake Mornos. Specifically, the recent rainfall boosted EYDAP’s reserves by approximately 15 million cubic meters. However, according to the company we are still behind by 200 million cubic meters compared to the same period last year.

EYDAP: Water reserves in Lake Mornos
More specifically, according to EYDAP’s latest data, Lake Mornos from whose waters the submerged village of Kallio has recently emerged due to prolonged drought, counted 148 million cubic meters of water on November 5th. Today the situation is slightly improved, as according to the latest data, the reserve has reached 177 million (without counting tomorrow, when the large volume of water that fell will begin to be absorbed).
Water shortage: What’s happening with the other three reservoirs
However, the situation is not the same for the other reservoirs that contribute to the water supply of the Attica basin.
Initially, the Evinos river from 48.750.000 cubic meters of water a month ago, today -according to the same data- has declined significantly to 39 million cubic meters. A similar picture at Yliki. On November 5th the reserves amounted to 154.784.000, while today the data shows 149.604.000 cubic meters of water.
On the other hand, Marathon appears to maintain a stable course, as over the last month the reserves have moved between 18-20 million cubic meters of water. In fact, EYDAP’s latest data shows that today there is a small increase compared to a month ago (19.331.000 versus 20.093.000).
