Sweeping changes to overtime and leave policies, as well as the possibility of implementing a four-day work week year-round, are brought by the new labor bill from the Ministry of Labor titled “Fair Work for All,” presented yesterday by Labor and Social Security Minister Niki Kerameos alongside Deputy Minister Kostas Karagounis and Secretary General of Labor Relations Nikos Milapidis.
Up to 5 hours of overtime per day with the same employer
Among the most decisive regulations of the bill is the ability for an employee to work up to 13 hours per day, either for multiple employers or – now – for a single employer, provided that rest limits and maximum weekly work limits are strictly observed. Additional hours count as overtime and are compensated with legal premiums, effectively offering incentives to both employees and employers.
Overtime for shift work
At the same time, overtime compensation is established for the first time in shift work, with a 40% premium, giving new meaning to flexible employment.
Four-day work week for the entire year
Of particular interest is the regulation that now allows permanent implementation of a four-day work week throughout the entire year. This regulation is not limited to seasonal frameworks or pilot programs, but is established as a permanent alternative for employees who – in agreement with their employer – desire greater balance between their personal and professional lives. This option is particularly suitable for working parents or those seeking a more flexible work model, without reducing total weekly working hours.
New framework for leave policies
Special emphasis is placed on the area of leave, where a framework of greater flexibility is established. Specifically, employees will be able – in agreement with their employer – to distribute their annual vacation leave as they wish, responding to their actual needs. At the same time, mandatory forms such as the leave book and annual leave schedule are eliminated, simplifying administrative procedures and reducing bureaucracy for businesses.
Digital and operational revolution
The bill lays the foundation for a digitally organized work environment through the myErgani application and a new mobile app for employers, through which they can quickly and easily manage all employment relationships – even proceed with rapid hiring for two-day needs.
Series of labor and insurance regulations
The bill also provides for a series of new labor and insurance regulations that enhance the professional and personal lives of workers.
Among these:
- Extension of maternity benefits to more categories of mothers
- Securing parental leave benefits as unseizable and tax-free
- Protection from unilateral salary reductions after implementation of the Digital Work Card
- Ability for self-declaration of voluntary departure through ERGANI II
