Customs inspectors of the AADE, following a targeted investigation at a logistics warehouse in Elefsina, uncovered one of the largest cases of smuggling in recent years. According to estimates, the evaded customs duties and taxes exceed €1,600,000.
AADE: Investigation details reveal massive contraband operation
The contraband products, of Chinese origin (mainly clothing and footwear), were intended for distribution in the domestic market without payment of customs duties and VAT. The investigation began at the 1st Piraeus Customs Office, where an initial x-ray inspection detected suspicious goods. This was followed by a surprise operation by ELYT Attica in Elefsina, during which 17 containers with cargo ready for export were discovered.
The containers contained cheap clothing used as a “showcase” to mislead customs authorities, while the main merchandise had already been distributed in the domestic market without payment of customs duties and VAT.
