Only a few days remain before the start of the new school year, when students and teachers will return to classrooms.
Specifically, schools open on September 11th, with parents already considering the costs they’ll need to cover to purchase essential school supplies, which appear to be more expensive than last year.
“Heavy” school supply basket: More expensive compared to last year
Following last year’s price increases, which ranged from 10% to 22%, prices this year are rising even more, exceeding 20% in some cases.
Examples of school supply price increases
The increases are clearly visible in the following examples, concerning basic items that students need.
- Mechanical pencil: from €4.99 in 2024, now €5.59 (+12%).
- Two-subject spiral notebook: from €1.39 to €1.49 (+7%).
- Art markers: from €19.30 to €21.90 (+13%).
- Correction fluid: from €1.79 to €2.19 (+22%).
The cost burden for families due to continuous increases in school supplies is unbearable, consequently creating even more pressure on household budgets.
