Cash withdrawals from Greek bank ATMs will be completely free – without any fees – starting tomorrow, Monday August 11, based on an amendment by the Ministry of National Economy and Finance recently submitted to the National Customs Code bill.
Under the new regulation by the Finance Ministry, charges for cash withdrawals from ATMs are completely abolished, while a ceiling of €1.50 is established for withdrawals made from third-party provider machines.
The new policy addresses a long-standing demand from citizens for fair and transparent charges in banking services.
Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis described the intervention as having a social dimension, noting that this regulation “eliminates unfair and excessive charges, ensuring that every citizen, wherever they live, will have free access to their money.”
The amendment provides for:
- Zero fees for cash withdrawals between all banks participating in the DIA interbank system
- Zero charges from third-party providers in municipal communities where only one ATM operates
- €1.50 ceiling for withdrawals from third-party payment service provider ATMs nationwide
- Free balance inquiries for all cardholders, regardless of bank or ATM provider
- Unified €0.50 charge for sending transfers via digital channels (web, mobile, internet banking) from third-party providers, on par with bank charges
- Legislative guarantee that no bank can charge its customers for cash withdrawals
