Massive and sweeping inspections by the Independent Authority for Public Revenue continue throughout August across all summer tourist destinations in mainland Greece and the islands, as part of Operation Summer. AADE inspectors are imposing fines and closures of two or more days wherever violations are found, across all business sectors.
Specifically, the inspection approach is comprehensive and 360-degree, with auditors conducting surprise visits to businesses, thoroughly examining data from POS systems and cash registers, and cross-referencing them with myDATA information received continuously online and VAT declarations. This approach enables them to audit previous years as well.
Notable examples:
In Mykonos, a folk art store had not issued receipts – for 2021 and 2022 – worth €107,000, collecting and not remitting €26,000 in VAT. A fine of €13,000 was imposed along with a two-day closure.
In Mykonos, an Italian restaurant had not issued a single receipt in 2021, totaling €28,000 plus €4,000 in VAT. The fine is €2,000, accompanied by a 48-hour closure.
Similar closures and fines were imposed on restaurants in Astypalea, Heraklion, Chania, and Lesvos.
Tax evasion is also being detected in vehicle and motorcycle rental businesses. Four in Paros and two in Milos had not issued receipts worth €18,000, plus €4,350 in VAT, and were hit with fines and special monetary penalties.
