The agreement between the EU and US prevented a trade war, however it creates significant challenges for Greek exports. Products such as olive oil, feta cheese, yogurt, wine and olives risk losing the competitive advantage they had gained in the American market. The government is searching for ways to secure exemptions from the new tariffs.
The Ministry of National Economy is awaiting the final text of the agreement, which, according to sources, will clearly determine which product categories will be exempt from the additional 15% tariff. There is consideration for creating a special working group that will thoroughly analyze the text, seeking legal margins and negotiation opportunities, with the goal of securing favorable treatment for important Greek products.
A significant obstacle for Greece is that negotiations with the US will not take place on a bilateral level, but will occur within the framework of the European Union and with the participation of all member states. The need for a common European stance limits the Greek government’s ability to move independently, making it necessary to promote Greek positions in Brussels and convincingly highlight the importance of PDO products that support the country’s exports.
