After the exhausting temperatures that tormented the country over recent days, consumers are now called to face the… second wave of the heatwave: inflated electricity bills. The continuous use of air conditioning, essential for survival in extreme conditions, is causing intense concern about upcoming charges.
The average wholesale electricity price in July recorded an increase of around 20% compared to June, due to prolonged demand caused by high temperatures. Consumers are already trying to calculate the cost, counting how many hours their air conditioners operated during the critical week.
The final amount on the bill depends on factors such as the size of the space being cooled, as well as the duration of device operation. Many tried to turn them off during nighttime hours, but during the day usage was almost continuous.
Lucky with the final bill will be those who spent money to upgrade their home’s energy efficiency.
Business owners, in turn, find themselves in despair, as they say summer means working only to pay bills. Merchant associations, however, advise their members to make agreements with providers by choosing fixed prices while demanding interventions to relieve small and medium enterprises from operational costs.
