Almost one in two Greeks (specifically 46%) cannot financially afford a week-long vacation, according to the latest Eurostat data for 2024. Greece thus ranks second across Europe in the “tourism exclusion” index, following Romania.

Eurostat: 27% of EU population aged 16 and over could not financially afford one week of annual holidays
Specifically, in 2024, 27% of the EU population aged 16 and over could not financially afford one week of annual holidays away from home. This percentage decreased by 1.5 percentage points compared to 2023 and is significantly lower (by 10.6 percentage points) than it was a decade ago, in 2014.
It is noted that the highest percentages of people who cannot financially afford annual week-long holidays were recorded in Romania (58.6%), Greece (46.0%) and Bulgaria (41.4%). Conversely, 8.9% of people in Luxembourg, 11.6% in Sweden and 13.0% in the Netherlands reported that they cannot financially afford a week’s holiday away from home in 2024.
