The meeting between Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou and Deputy Minister Nikos Tsafos with a Chevron delegation in Houston has resulted in accelerated hydrocarbon exploration in Greece, targeting seismic surveys south of Crete by the end of 2026. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the CERAWeek conference and is part of efforts to accelerate hydrocarbon exploration and attract major energy groups, at a time when Europe is seeking alternative energy sources due to increased geopolitical uncertainty.
Papastavrou: After ratification of energy agreements we proceed immediately to their implementation
“I had a substantial meeting with Chevron. With Vice Presidents Kevin McLachlan and Gavin Lewis. After the ratification of energy agreements, we are proceeding immediately to their implementation. We set a clear timeline and initiated the necessary actions so that we have seismic surveys south of Crete before the end of 2026,” Minister Papastavrou noted in a statement to ERT.
The Energy Minister connected the energy developments with the international situation, noting that “the Middle East crisis emphatically confirms Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s choice for the immediate development of the hydrocarbon sector,” while adding that “Greece is steadily moving towards its energy self-sufficiency, relying on its own strengths and national wealth.”
“With confidence we are upgrading our geopolitical role and building an energy-secure future for our homeland,” Minister Papastavrou concluded in his statement after completing the meeting.
