The Court of Auditors has given the “green light” for the signing of the contract for the major irrigation PPP project, which provides for the transfer and distribution of water from the Nestos River to the eastern plains of Xanthi. This is an investment with a total value of €220.5 million, with the GEK TERNA group as the provisional contractor, which is expected to be called by the competent authorities soon to sign the relevant contract.
The project, titled “Transfer and distribution of water from the Nestos River to the plains of Xanthi for irrigation purposes,” is part of the Hydor 2.0 program, constituting the largest PPP project of the program and the second to proceed to the implementation phase. Of the €220.5 million total budget: €169.5 million corresponds to the net present value of the project (plus VAT), while €51 million will be covered through the Recovery and Resilience Fund.
The implementation contract provides for a duration of 25 years, including the construction period. The project involves the development of an extensive irrigation and water supply system in the plains of Xanthi, through the construction of new and upgrading of existing infrastructure, with the aim of utilizing the water resources of the Nestos River and strengthening the agricultural production of the region. The project is expected to constitute a pivotal intervention for supporting the primary sector, sustainable management of natural resources and strengthening the local economy.
