The Commission proposes a comprehensive housing policy framework, based on eight pillars with a total value of 375 billion euros, which are detailed in 25 measures. Europe will dig deep into its budget and allocate the staggering amount of €375 billion for housing solutions that will be long-term beneficial on a social, economic and environmental level.
As Housing Policy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen emphasized, the Commission leaves the specific measures to the discretion of individual countries, particularly regarding taxation of profiteering. The new affordable housing plan – according to the commissioner – does not override the primary responsibility of member states to take measures in the housing sector, but seeks to function in a complementary and coordinating manner, offering common direction, financing tools and cooperation frameworks at European, national and local levels.
