Diamantis Masoutis records a historic achievement, as it emerges as the first company in Greek retail to publish a Sustainability Development Report based on the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). This move confirms the company’s strategic commitment to sustainability, corporate responsibility and modern governance.
Innovative accessibility initiatives from Masoutis
In the field of social inclusion, Masoutis differentiates itself with the revolutionary MasVision program. Two specially designed stores, one in Thessaloniki and one in Athens, offer pioneering solutions for people with visual disabilities. This award-winning program combines advanced technology with human-centered design, enhancing consumer autonomy during the shopping process.
Environmental excellence and circular economy
Masoutis’ environmental strategy is reflected in specific achievements. As the only supermarket company in Greece, it has obtained the Zero Waste to Landfill certification, achieving a waste diversion rate of 93.49%. This percentage dramatically exceeds the national recycling index which stands at 17.3%. At the same time, the company has invested in renewable energy sources, installing photovoltaic systems with a total capacity of 2MW. The facilities in Thermi and the Logistics Center in Kavalari produce approximately 1.2 GW of clean energy annually since 2022.
Supporting domestic production and local producers
Masoutis’ philosophy includes actively supporting the Greek agri-food chain. Through partnerships with hundreds of local producers across the country, the company strengthens domestic production. The private label product line “Masoutis, from our land” is produced exclusively in Greece, contributing to the resilience of the domestic agri-food sector.
Digital transformation and technological innovation
Digital transformation is a key pillar of Masoutis’ strategy. The company utilizes artificial intelligence systems for demand forecasting and inventory optimization. The online store masoutis.gr serves 50 cities and islands, while investments in cloud technologies ensure data security. Two proprietary Data Centers operate according to international standards, guaranteeing uninterrupted operation of critical applications on a 24/7 basis.
Corporate social responsibility and social actions
In 2024, Masoutis’ Corporate Social Responsibility actions exceeded 680,000 euros. The company collaborated with more than 35 NGOs and supported over 10,000 families through the “Together, where there is need” program.
Characteristic initiatives include:
- Sponsorship of the UniquAll program for neurodivergent children
- Cleaning of the Thermaikos Gulf
- Hours without audio announcements for neurodivergent individuals
- Establishment of an Asia Minor Studies chair at the University of Macedonia
Gender equality and work environment
Masoutis employs 10,720 workers and stands out for its equality policies. 52% of management positions in stores are held by women, compared to 34.8% of the national average. In administrative positions, the percentage reaches 25%. Equal pay policies and promotion of equal opportunities contribute to reducing the employment gap between genders, creating a balanced work environment.
Leadership statement on the future of sustainability
President and CEO Giannis Masoutis emphasized: “Sustainability is a conscious leadership choice and an integral part of our business strategy. We continuously invest in innovation, environmental protection and empowering our people, shaping developments in the Greek supermarket sector.” The publication of Masoutis’ first sustainability development report comes at a critical time for Greece, where progress is recorded but also challenges in the Sustainable Development Goals. The company not only aligns with but exceeds national indicators, confirming its pioneering role in Greek retail.
