A new and substantial chapter of cooperation with local communities is opening for LAMDA Development, presenting new initiatives for environmental protection, climate crisis response, and support for vulnerable social groups in collaboration with leading university institutions and scientific organizations across the country.
LAMDA’s initiatives, which were presented at an event at the Museum of Cycladic Art, focus on improving the quality of life for residents of neighboring areas and protecting against the impacts of climate change. The starting point was the needs, expectations, and concerns of residents in neighboring municipalities, as documented through extensive research conducted by LAMDA in the context of developing The Ellinikon. The research also highlighted challenges connected to the construction activities of such a large project.
Lamda Development: Where the cohesive action network focuses
Based on these findings, LAMDA designed a cohesive network of actions that focuses on:
- protecting and strengthening the natural environment,
- addressing climate change,
- supporting vulnerable groups and the new generation,
- as well as limiting disruption and environmental footprint from construction work.
Additionally, a special interactive dashboard is being created on The Ellinikon website for online monitoring of measurements by any interested party, aiming for complete transparency.
With the clear goal that these actions produce measurable, long-term, and substantial results, LAMDA proceeded with strategic partnerships with the Agricultural University of Athens, the National Observatory of Athens, the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), and other distinguished organizations in the country.
Presenting the new initiatives, Sissy Iliopoulou, Chief Marketing & Communication Officer of LAMDA, emphasized: “Our main goal is continuous, open, honest, and – above all – constructive dialogue with our neighbors and all our partners. The Ellinikon project is not simply a large development. It is a unique opportunity for Athens and Greece, with a positive impact on society and the environment.”
What Maria Papafotiou declared
Professor and Director of Floriculture and Landscape Architecture at the Agricultural University of Athens, Dr. Maria Papafotiou stated: “The collaboration between the Agricultural University of Athens and LAMDA represents a substantial step in connecting scientific knowledge with practice. The study we presented documents how urban planning can enhance green spaces and biodiversity, improve microclimate, and upgrade residents’ quality of life. Our collaboration aims to contribute to a sustainable development model with positive and long-term environmental impact for the broader Ellinikon area.”
Vasilis Kapsimalis’s statement
The Director of the Institute of Oceanography at HCMR, Dr. Vasilis Kapsimalis, stated: “Our strategic cooperation with LAMDA concerns monitoring the marine environment at the Ellinikon coastal front. Utilizing our expertise and experience, we ensure that marine waters, seabed, and marine organisms remain unaffected by potential impacts of construction work.”
What Evangelos Gerasopoulos mentioned
The Director of the Institute for Environmental Research and Sustainable Development at the National Observatory of Athens, Dr. Evangelos Gerasopoulos, mentioned among other things that “LAMDA has proceeded with cooperation with the Institute for Environmental Research and Sustainable Development of the National Observatory of Athens, aiming to study the impacts of Ellinikon on the microclimate and biodiversity species of the area, as well as develop an early warning system for extreme weather events in Ellinikon and areas of neighboring municipalities. Among other things, we are examining the long-term impact of the Ellinikon Metropolitan Park on local communities and the broader project development area.
What Antonis Kanavakis emphasized
Antonis Kanavakis, LAMDA’s representative for environmental management and monitoring of The Ellinikon, noted the following: “Since the start of construction work, LAMDA in cooperation with contractor partners records and monitors environmental parameter levels around the Ellinikon perimeter as well as in project areas. Additionally, it proceeds with installing 15 noise and dust measurement stations around the Ellinikon perimeter, and 3 stations in neighboring municipalities. Our purpose is continuous and uninterrupted monitoring of parameters, targeted implementation of environmental protection measures, and ultimately minimizing social disruptions.”
