Key pillars of the collaboration
The partnership is built on three fundamental pillars:
· Joint graduate programs, online skill development programs for human resources, and executive education programs, which will be implemented jointly by UNIC Athens and Purdue.
· Coordinated research and innovation action in collaboration with UNIC Evolve, the University of Nicosia’s major research initiative focused on leveraging artificial intelligence to improve human life, with particular emphasis on health span duration and quality, longevity, and biodefense.
· Establishment of a Purdue Regional Office on the UNIC Athens campus at The Ellinikon, a developing “smart city” hub in Athens that combines advanced infrastructure, cutting-edge technology, and emphasis on quality of life.
“We envision an evolutionary opportunity with the planned opening of a regional office on the UNIC Athens campus in this new ‘smart’ city,” said Dimitrios Peroulis, Senior Vice President of Purdue for Partnerships and Online Education. “We are deeply grateful to our partners who generously provide this space at no financial burden to Purdue, in order to support the launch of our presence at The Ellinikon. Located in Europe’s largest urban redevelopment project and in close proximity to cutting-edge technology and innovation, the Purdue space will enable our researchers and students to collaborate meaningfully with industry and the broader innovation ecosystem in Greece and the wider region.”
The collaboration will coordinate research, teaching, and innovation activities in cutting-edge fields such as:
· Precision health, personalized pharmaceuticals and medicine
· Next-generation sequencing and life sciences
· Robotics and artificial intelligence
· Agricultural and biomedical engineering
· Digital twins and computational fluid dynamics
· Analytical chemistry
“This partnership with Purdue University strengthens UNIC Athens’ role as a bridge between Europe and the United States in advanced education and research,” said Dimitris Drikakis, Vice President of the University of Nicosia for Global Partnerships and Dean of the School of Sciences and Engineering. “Together, we are creating internationally connected programs and international innovation pathways that directly respond to future technological and social challenges.”
“We are particularly pleased to welcome this new partnership between the University of Nicosia and Purdue University at The Ellinikon, which further strengthens our vision of creating a world-class hub of education, innovation, and international impact,” said Odysseas Athanasiou, CEO of LAMDA Development.
This global partnership underscores two key priorities for Purdue: the One Health initiative, which combines research on human, animal, and plant health, and Purdue Computes, which aims to establish the university as a global leader in computational science, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and quantum science.
