The Greek Navy will now be significantly strengthened with four Belharra FDI class frigates. The signing of the contract worth 982 million euros by the General Directorate of Defense Equipment and Investments on Friday morning, November 13, marks not only the acquisition of the digital frigate, but also increased Greek participation in construction, which will reach 25% of the program. According to SKAI’s report, the expenditure will be paid from 2025 to 2030, while the decision for the procurement was made during the summer and approved by KYSEA and the Parliamentary Plenary.
This specific move, for the frigate that will be named Themistokles and will be the fourth of those to be procured by the Navy – and which is expected to strengthen the surface fleet, consequently all Greek Armed Forces.
4th Belharra agreement: Enhanced capabilities
SKAI reports that the 4th Belharra, otherwise digital, will not simply be Standard 2, but with two plus signs (++) at the end, meaning enhanced capabilities. Greece, meanwhile, expects, as emphasized, within 35 days, that is on October 18, the “Kimon”. That is the first frigate of the FDI class, with details remaining to complete trials and be delivered to the Navy. It will reach Greek waters in early 2026, however on December 18 the ceremony of raising the Greek flag will take place in Lorient, France. The military leadership and certainly Defense Minister Nikos Dendias are set to attend. In fact, an event for its arrival is already being organized.
SKAI also mentioned the first three frigates:
F/G “Kimon” (F-601): Has already begun sea trials and its delivery is expected soon (mentioned around December).
F/G “Nearhos” (F-602): Its launch took place in September 2024.
F/G “Formion” (F-603): Its launch ceremony was held recently (around June 2025).
