A challenge attempt by a 22-year-old in Koropi took a shocking turn when he tried to swallow an entire burger without chewing, resulting in his emergency transfer and intubation at Gennimatas hospital. The incident occurred when the 22-year-old and his friends went out for burgers and decided to bet on consuming the entire meal without chewing it, causing his airway to become blocked. He is now hospitalized in the ICU in critical condition with potentially irreversible damage.
Doctor comments on 22-year-old hospitalized at Gennimatas: He is in very critical condition
Former president of the Athens-Piraeus Hospital Doctors Union (EINAP), Matina Pagoni, spoke about this tragic incident on MEGA TV Wednesday morning, November 12. “These are tragic situations. A 22-year-old who went to Koropi to have fun is now intubated in very critical condition, with very serious problems in his brain, kidneys, and all organs,” said Pagoni, describing the very difficult situation.
As Pagoni described, the two young men bet on swallowing the entire burger, resulting in the 22-year-old’s airway becoming blocked, with no one present who could help with first aid to clear the airway obstruction.
“The ambulance arrived at the scene, performed CPR, transferred him to the hospital, and he was intubated… You understand that things are very, very difficult,” Pagoni emphasized, noting that airway obstruction isn’t uncommon, which is why we must be careful when eating. She also stressed that first aid knowledge is something everyone should have, as none of the 22-year-old’s friends could help him.
