An incredible incident occurred during the lengthy testimony of former Agricultural Development Minister Lefteris Avgenakis before the parliamentary investigative committee for OPEKEPE. Mr. Avgenakis pulled out a packet of candy from his jacket, causing independent MP for Corfu Alexandros Avlonitis to explode with anger.
“When you’re being questioned, Mr. witness, don’t chew. Only goats ruminate,” the MP shouted furiously. “Are you listening to me? Don’t chew when I’m asking you questions. Do you know how many hours we’ve been here?” Mr. Avlonitis continued, adding: “Look at the irony. He’s showing me the candies. Is it proper to suck on candy, Mr. Chairman? Put some order in place finally.”
For his part, Mr. Avgenakis chose not to respond and not to escalate the incident further.
