Following misinterpretations circulated regarding the new Traffic Code, authorities have issued clarifications about what is and isn’t permitted behind the wheel.
The goal of these clarifications is to avoid false impressions about “fines” for habits like drinking coffee in the car, shopping bags on seats, or driving while wearing a thick jacket.
New traffic code: Driving with thick jacket
According to authorities, nowhere in the new traffic code does it state that wearing thick jackets results in administrative penalties.
No such prohibition exists and the code does not provide for fines regarding driver clothing.
New traffic code: Placement or consumption of coffee and water
The new code does not prohibit the use of special holders for coffee or water, nor the consumption of beverages inside the vehicle.
The only relevant point is Article 18, paragraph 2, which states that drivers must have complete freedom of movement for safe driving.
This provision also existed in the previous traffic code (Law 2696/1999), without ever being misinterpreted by enforcement agencies.
Shopping bags and purchases on seats
Similarly, there is no prohibition on carrying bags or shopping inside the vehicle cabin.
Article 36, paragraph 4 states that cargo must be securely placed, so as not to obstruct driving or visibility and not endanger passengers or third parties.
Authorities recommend, where possible, using the trunk for greater safety and space organization.
What drivers need to know
None of the above actions – coffee, shopping, or jackets – result in fines, provided basic safe driving rules are followed.
The requirement, according to the new traffic code, is safe behavior and attention on the road, not punishment of everyday habits.
