Donald Trump‘s speech at the Israel Knesset lasted more than an hour, delivered during the American president’s Middle East visit for the Egypt summit. During his historic address, the US president asked Israel’s President Isaac Herzog to grant a pardon to the country’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. It should be noted that Benjamin Netanyahu was charged in 2019 with bribery, fraud, and breach of trust – charges he denies, calling them “completely absurd.”
Specifically, Trump – during his historic speech at the Israeli parliament Knesset – called for the cancellation of the corruption trial against Netanyahu and appealed to Israel’s President to grant a pardon to the Israeli Prime Minister amid ongoing legal proceedings.
Trump on Netanyahu: “Mr. President, why don’t you give him a pardon?”
“Mr. President, why don’t you give him a pardon?” Trump said, addressing Israeli President Isaac Herzog. Trump claimed his comment wasn’t premeditated. However, he stated he couldn’t help but support his ally.
“I happen to like this gentleman here, and it seems very logical to me, you know, whether we like it or not, that he’s one of the greatest wartime presidents,” he said.
“Cigars and champagne, who cares,” he said, referring to allegations that Netanyahu had received expensive gifts, including cigars and champagne, from foreign businessmen.
