The automatic payment of the rent refund will take place in the final days of November, bringing financial relief to more than one million tenants across Greece. The amount deposited into beneficiaries’ bank accounts corresponds to one month’s rent and can reach up to €800 per year.
Everything you need to know about the rent refund
The new ministerial decision sets the maximum subsidy amount at €800 annually for primary residences. Families with dependent children receive an additional €50 for each child. A significant innovation is the elimination of the requirement to submit an amended E1 tax declaration to complete code 081.
Students living in declared student accommodation are also entitled to subsidies up to €800 annually. When multiple siblings share the same student accommodation, the rent refund is paid only once.
Rent refund: Income and asset criteria for beneficiaries
To receive the rent refund, interested parties must meet specific requirements:
• Single individuals: Total family income up to €20,000 and real estate assets up to €120,000
• Married couples: Income up to €28,000 with €4,000 increase per child
• Single-parent families: Income up to €31,000 with €5,000 increase per dependent child
Asset limits increase proportionally for married couples and families with children.
Automatic rent refund payment process without application
The rent refund payment is fully automated, requiring no action from beneficiaries. The Independent Authority for Public Revenue automatically collects necessary data from E1 and E2 tax declarations, as well as rental declarations.
The system verifies the existence of an active rental contract and calculates the entitled amount. The subsidy corresponds to one-twelfth of the annual rent, with a maximum limit of €800. The lump sum payment is made by the end of each November directly to the beneficiary’s bank account.
