“Hamas’s statement is an important step forward. Hostages must be released immediately and all hostilities must stop. Greece remains steadfast in supporting efforts aimed at restoring stability and promoting lasting peace and security in the region.”
Hamas statement and the American president’s response
In its response to the US plan, Hamas reportedly stated the following:
“After a comprehensive study, the movement made its decision and submitted the following response to mediators: Hamas appreciates Arab, Islamic and international efforts, as well as the efforts of US President Donald Trump, calling for ending the war in the Gaza Strip, exchanging prisoners, immediate entry of aid, rejecting the occupation of the Strip and rejecting the displacement of the Palestinian people from it. In this context, and in a way that will achieve ending the war and complete withdrawal from the Strip, the movement announces its agreement to release all living and dead prisoners of the occupation, according to the type of exchange included in President Trump’s proposal, and provided that the conditions exist for the exchange process. In this context, the movement confirms its readiness to immediately begin negotiations through mediators to discuss the details of this matter. The movement also renews its agreement to hand over the administration of the Gaza Strip to a Palestinian body of independents (technocrats), based on Palestinian national consensus and based on Arab and Islamic support. The other issues mentioned in President Trump’s proposal regarding the future of the Gaza Strip and the inherent rights of the Palestinian people are linked to an overall national position and are based on relevant international laws and resolutions, and are discussed within the framework of an overall Palestinian national framework, in which Hamas will also participate.”
For his part, Donald Trump reacted through an announcement, in which he characteristically stated that “we are very close to achieving peace in the Middle East,” while also in a social media post, he declared that, based on Hamas’s recent announcement, it appears the organization is ready for “lasting peace.” Trump emphasized the need for Israel to immediately stop bombing the Gaza Strip, so that hostages can be released safely and quickly. The president characterized the situation as an opportunity to achieve the long-sought peace in the Middle East.
Following this statement, “Israeli political leadership ordered the Israeli army to freeze the campaign to capture Gaza City,” as reported around 04:00 Saturday morning by Israeli radio network Army Radio and Israeli public broadcasting network Kan.
