Mercury has climbed to extreme heights, with heatwave temperatures tormenting masses of people and readings in the 40s being recorded in many areas across the country. Attica is also “baking” with mercury reaching critical levels while the risk of wildfire today and tomorrow is very high in a series of regions across the country. The first strong heat wave of this summer is underway, as warm air masses arrive from Africa. According to meteorologists’ forecasts, heatwave temperatures will persist until Friday while there will be relief from Saturday with a significant temperature drop of up to 10 degrees.
For Thursday, according to the Fire Service’s wildfire risk forecast map, the risk of fire outbreak is high in Attica and Kythira, Boeotia, Corinthia, Argolida, Laconia, Messinia, Evia, Phthiotida, Crete, Lesbos, Chios, Psara, Samos and Icaria.

Kolydas: Three-day heat wave – Warm air masses from the Balkans
Theodoros Kolydas predicts a three-day heat wave with high temperatures. Characteristically, the former director of the National Meteorological Service Theodoros Kolydas spoke of a three-day heat wave, as warm air masses are coming to our region from the northwestern Balkans.

The heat wave will peak on Friday, when mercury will climb locally to 41 degrees Celsius, while from Saturday a gradual decline in temperature is expected.
Meanwhile, in a post made yesterday by Theodoros Kolydas, he explained that the term “heatwave” does not have a unified definition internationally, as the limits vary depending on location and local climatic conditions.
For example, temperatures around 35 degrees are considered extremely high for Scandinavian countries, while for southern Europe – and especially for Greece – they are completely normal for the season.
Conversely, temperatures close to 40 degrees, which in the Sahara or Middle Eastern regions are part of everyday life, in our country signal the onset of a strong heat episode – that is, a heatwave. In the following post, there is a brief presentation of the forecast data, with Athens as an example, while the same principles can be applied to any other city.
Detailed post by Theodoros Kolydas:
“WHAT IS A HEATWAVE AND WHERE WILL TEMPERATURE REACH IN THE COMING DAYS – HOW WE CAN READ METEOGRAMS
Although there is no common definition of heatwave in international terminology, we note that the criteria for its definition differ according to the geographical position and climatic conditions of an area. For example, while in Scandinavian countries temperature values around 35 degrees are considered to approach the limits of ‘heatwave’, for our region they are characterized as normal.
Conversely, values around 40 degrees, while for residents of the Sahara or Saudi Arabia are considered rather normal, for our country are characterized as ‘heatwave’ values“.
Marousakis: The first strong heat wave is coming with temperatures in the 40s
As meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis points out, this is the first strong heat wave of this summer period, with maximum mercury values peaking on Thursday and Friday. In several mainland areas, mainly in closed plains, temperatures are expected to reach or even exceed 40 degrees Celsius.
The highest temperatures will be recorded in the interior of Thessaly, central Macedonia, western Central Greece and western Peloponnese, where locally mercury may even touch 41°C.
In Attica, the weather will be clear, with light northerly winds in the east, and temperatures up to 38-39°C in the interior of the basin. Similarly, in Thessaloniki sunshine is forecast with temporary cloudiness in the mountains in the afternoon and maximum temperatures around 36-37°C.
Today Wednesday, the heat will be noticeable throughout the country, with the thermometer reaching 37-38 degrees in many mainland areas.
The intense heat will continue until Saturday, when a change of scenery is expected with the entry of a cooler air mass from the north. The weather change will start from the eastern and northern geographical regions, with mercury dropping by up to 10 degrees. On Sunday, the coolness will be felt throughout the country, with temperatures in Attica not exceeding 28 degrees.
Particular attention is required on Thursday and Friday, as the temperatures combined with strengthening northerly winds to almost gale-force levels create dangerous conditions for wildfire outbreaks. The competent authorities appeal to citizens for increased vigilance and avoidance of activities that may cause fires, especially in areas with dry vegetation.
