New evidence has emerged in the deadly explosion in Plaka that claimed six lives on September 21, through two security camera videos. The first captures the moment the building on Lysikratous Street was reduced to rubble, while the second allegedly shows the three suspects in the Neos Kosmos neighborhood — approximately one hour after the disaster — dividing the items they had stolen. This footage has been added to the evidence authorities are examining regarding the movements of the three men, who were remanded in custody following their testimonies on Monday, November 2. According to reports, the suspects admit to having entered the building but deny causing the explosion.
Plaka explosion: The moment of destruction on Lysikratous Street
According to ertnews.gr, a security camera from a neighboring building captured the seconds of the powerful explosion. The footage initially shows an intense flash of light, followed by the deafening blast that shook the entire neighborhood. Alarms from nearby buildings were triggered, debris was hurled into the air, and thick black smoke engulfed the area. The images capture the sheer force of the explosion that occurred on September 21 and caused the building to collapse, resulting in the tragic loss of six lives. The new visual material documents the scale of the incident, while authorities continue to investigate the circumstances under which the gas leak was triggered.
Suspects allegedly caught dividing stolen goods in Neos Kosmos
The second video comes from a security camera in the Neos Kosmos neighborhood and, according to reports, captures the three suspects approximately one hour after the deadly explosion. According to MEGA, the footage allegedly shows the 55-year-old known by the nickname “Bouboum,” the 37-year-old known as “Argyris,” and their 34-year-old accomplice. The three men appear to be dividing the stolen goods among themselves, while back in Plaka the tragic consequences of the disaster were already beginning to unfold. This footage is being examined alongside the other findings of the investigation. According to the Fire Service, the suspects allegedly caused a natural gas leak while attempting to strip copper pipes from the building.
Three suspects remanded in custody
The two Greek nationals and the Albanian citizen appeared before the court on Monday, November 2 and, with the agreement of both the examining magistrate and the prosecutor, were remanded in pre-trial custody. As they were brought into the courthouse, one of the suspects stated: “I apologize, but I was not responsible for the explosion.” Another expressed his condolences for the six people who lost their lives.
The three men face charges of arson and causing an explosion resulting in death, manslaughter with eventual intent in conjunction and co-perpetration, as well as causing grievous bodily harm. Meanwhile, relatives of the American tourists who were killed have filed as civil plaintiffs in the case. The two videos represent new evidence in the case, though they do not prejudge the criminal liability of the suspects, which will ultimately be determined by the courts.
