Greece is enjoying a welcome weather reprieve this week, with weather conditions taking on a noticeably milder character, temperatures climbing, and sunshine dominating across most of the country.
Following the intense weather events of recent days, winds have eased significantly, while the mercury is rising and is expected to remain at relatively high levels through Saturday, October 10. Conditions will begin to shift from Wednesday, October 7, initially affecting the Ionian region, while from Thursday, October 8, instability will become more pronounced in western Greece — though no widespread weather change appears to be on the horizon for the time being.
As meteorologist Christina Rigou explains to parapolitika.gr, the week has opened with a distinctly “summer-like feel,” with temperatures moving closer to seasonal norms. “Generally, the week is starting with a more summery mood, with temperatures closer to normal for this time of year, as the mercury rises,” Rigou notes.
Temperatures climbing to 27–28°C
Rising temperatures are one of the defining features of this week’s forecast. According to Rigou, maximum values through Saturday will generally hover around 25 to 27°C, while in western Greece temperatures could locally reach as high as 28°C. The picture will look quite different in the early morning hours, however, particularly in the country’s mountainous regions. The meteorologist points out that sub-zero temperatures are still being recorded on the mountains at dawn, despite the daytime highs. Meanwhile, winds have dropped considerably and will remain generally light over the coming days, with speeds reaching up to 5 Beaufort.
Two sunny days — when does rain return?
The week has opened with two days of dominant sunshine, with Rigou noting that Monday and Tuesday are set to be the sunniest days of the week. Today, Tuesday, October 6, weather will remain very favorable across most of the country before a first, limited change begins to emerge from midweek. The first rainfall is expected from Wednesday, initially over the Ionian Sea, though the phenomenon will not affect the entire country. A more substantial shift will arrive from Thursday onward, when conditions will turn more unsettled in western Greece, bringing rain and isolated thunderstorms.
Where rain and thunderstorms are expected from Thursday
According to Rigou, the instability will be concentrated mainly in three regions: Epirus, Western Central Greece, and Western Macedonia. Despite the return of rain in the west, conditions across the rest of the country are not expected to change significantly. As such, the midweek shift does not appear — based on current data — to signal a new widespread bout of severe weather, but rather a period of instability that will primarily affect western Greece.
What early data shows for the weekend
The weekend also appears set to pass without any major change for now, although instability in western Greece may persist. Rigou notes that unsettled weather is likely to continue in the three regions most affected from Thursday — namely Epirus, Western Central Greece, and Western Macedonia. The key question that remains is whether the instability will eventually spread further eastward and impact a greater part of the country.
Based on current data, then, this week is shaping up to be a notably milder one — marked by rising temperatures, weakened winds, and sunshine at the outset, before limited instability returns to western areas from midweek. For the rest of the country, conditions are expected to remain very favorable, with no significant change currently forecast for the weekend.
