The fact that the injured captain managed to open the cockpit door of the ill-fated FlyDubai flight was what prevented a major aviation disaster — had the perpetrator succeeded in his goal — said Phaidon Karaiosifidis, aeronautical engineer and aviation accident investigator, speaking on Parapolitika 90.1 during Lambros Kalarrytis’ show “We, the Greeks.” He emphasized that despite the sudden loss of 16,000 feet of altitude (approximately 4,900 meters), only a portion of the aircraft’s tail was destroyed — an exceptionally rare outcome. Mr. Karaiosifidis also noted that cockpit security protocols, which were established in the wake of the September 11 attacks in New York, may now be subject to review, as it has become clear that the threat can come from within the crew itself.
