METLEN and Dolomiti Energia have officially inaugurated a new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Erchie, Puglia, with a capacity of 25 MW and a storage capacity of 75 MWh. According to the announcement, the project — fully developed and implemented by METLEN — supports the further integration of renewable energy sources and strengthens the stability of Italy’s electricity grid. Operating as a standalone system, it provides grid flexibility and holds a Capacity Market agreement with Terna (Italy’s Energy Transmission Operator), reflecting the shared commitment of METLEN and Dolomiti Energia to innovative and long-term energy solutions.

The Erchie BESS is one of the first large-scale energy storage facilities to become operational in Italy, and the first storage project to be connected to the local substation in the area.
The inauguration ceremony took place on September 24th, in the presence of local government and institutional representatives, partners, and senior executives from both companies. During the event, guests were given a guided tour of the facility and received a detailed briefing on the project’s operations and its contribution to grid flexibility and reliability.
At the inauguration, Aris Spyropoulos, Managing Director of Central Europe at METLEN, highlighted the critical role of energy storage in the next phase of renewable energy development. As he noted, “the challenge is no longer limited to generating clean energy. It is also about ensuring that energy is available when households, businesses, and local communities need it.” He also emphasized the importance of the partnership with Dolomiti Energia and all stakeholders who contributed to the project’s realization, stating that “the energy transition requires collaboration, trust, and a shared long-term vision.”
