A chilling thriller is unfolding in Marathon, Greece, as a woman has allegedly confessed to authorities that approximately 10 years ago, she buried her mother in the courtyard of her home without reporting her death, in order to continue collecting her pension. The woman remains at the police station, where she is expected to provide a detailed statement, while the search of the property continues. Excavators have been deployed on-site, thoroughly searching the yard — yet the remains of the elderly woman have not been located so far.

How the Marathon case came to light: the granddaughter’s complaint
The case was brought to light following a complaint filed by the granddaughter of the elderly woman, who has been living in France for several years. The elderly woman had two children and lived at the property together with her daughter and grandson. The granddaughter, residing in France, reportedly alerted authorities about her concerns regarding her grandmother’s fate, as she had been unable to get in touch with her. According to information, a new complaint was filed with police approximately two weeks prior. Authorities visited the property and conducted a search of the premises, using specialized equipment — but failed to locate the body. Subsequently, the daughter allegedly admitted to having buried her mother at an undisclosed location within the courtyard, in order to continue receiving her pension. However, she has so far not indicated the exact spot.

A neighbor of the family, who has lived in the area for about ten years, described what he witnessed that morning — and what he knew about the people living in that house. “This morning we saw bulldozers and police. They said a woman had gone missing and they were searching the garden,” he told parapolitika.gr. The timeframe he describes roughly coincides with the period during which the elderly woman’s granddaughter claims to have lost contact with her grandmother. According to the neighbor, he would see a woman and her son living at the property. “It was Mrs. Zoi and her son, Lefteris. Mother and son,” he said. The neighbor explained that he had no close relationship with the family and that their interactions with the neighborhood in general were very limited. “We would have to be standing right next to each other to even talk. We didn’t have a relationship,” he noted. He also observed that the woman living there would mainly appear outside during the evening hours. “She basically only came out at night. Generally, we didn’t have much contact,” he revealed. The neighbor appeared visibly shaken by what he had learned was now being investigated right next door. “Hearing all of this happening right next to you — we just don’t know where things are heading,” he said.
