A 23-year-old Portuguese tourist who was pulled unconscious from the sea in Zakynthos is now out of danger, after having spent approximately 10 minutes underwater. Rescuers performed CPR on him for 79 minutes before he reached the hospital. According to Michalis Giannakos, president of the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Workers (POEDIN), the young man’s condition has shown a remarkable improvement. The young man, a graduate of Princeton University, managed to pull through, was taken off a ventilator, and is now communicating well with those around him.
As a reminder, the 23-year-old Portuguese tourist fell from a boat into the sea and was rescued by a 70-year-old fisherman from a depth of 12 meters off the coast of Zakynthos. According to Mr. Giannakos, despite spending approximately 10 minutes at the bottom of the sea, the young man’s life is no longer at risk.

It is worth noting that during his transfer to Zakynthos Hospital, a private physician on board the boat and subsequently EKAB emergency responders performed CPR on the young man for a total of 79 minutes, keeping him alive. Upon arrival at the hospital, he was intubated and admitted to the ICU in critical condition.
“Congratulations to the colleagues at Zakynthos Hospital who achieved a medical miracle,” said M. Giannakos, adding that the young man’s parents and sister never left his side throughout his ordeal.
